RPS welcomes legalisation of cannabis-derived medicinal products

Prescribing legal from 1 November

From tomorrow it will be legal for clinicians on the General Medical Council's specialist register to prescribe cannabis-derived medicinal products.

Commenting on the transfer of these products from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Ash Soni said:

“This is a great step forward for patients whose conditions will be improved by better access to cannabis-based medicinal products.

“The move will also make it easier for research into these products to take place.

“We welcome the letter issued today from NHS England which contains links to interim guidance from relevant bodies and separate guidance from the MHRA.”

Information for patients is also available on NHS Choices.
