RPS Board Meeting – February update

RPS Boards from England, Scotland and Wales came together for a virtual board meeting yesterday. They were joined by members across GB who could observe remotely and hear first-hand the updates and discussions.

COVID-19 continues to be a priority for the RPS and the Boards recognised the amazing work by pharmacists, pharmacist technicians and wider pharmacy staff to support patient care during the pandemic. There was discussion on how the RPS can keep supporting the profession in the coming months, as well as the potential role of pharmacists to help people living with long-term effects of COVID-19.

The Boards heard an update on RPS work on education and training. They welcomed the approval of new Initial Education and Training Standards by the General Pharmaceutical Council and discussed support for provisionally-registered pharmacists. Board members expressed disappointment at the news that some overseas students have been informed that they will be unable to take the registration assessment unless they can travel to an assessment centre in the UK. The RPS has urged the GPhC to reverse this decision.

The Boards also discussed our ongoing focus on inclusion and diversity and workforce wellbeing. Building on the success of our Action in Belong, Culture and Diversity group, the RPS is launching a new group for members to support our work on wellbeing. We’ll continue talking to pharmacists, employers and wider stakeholders about how we can take these key issues forward for the benefit of patients and the profession.

Observers who joined the meeting have been invited to provide feedback, so please do get in touch to help us improve the experience for members in future. The next Board meeting is on 23 June.
