RPS England comments on select committee hearing

Responding to today’s select committee session on coronavirus: lessons learnt, RPS England Chair Claire Anderson said:

“Pharmacists have been on the frontline of COVID-19 and it’s vital we learn lessons for the future.

“There were a number challenges during the pandemic, including on staff safety and access to PPE, clarifying changes to guidance, and rolling out test and trace.

“With pharmacy teams going above and beyond to look after patients, the RPS called on the Government and the NHS to give them the support they needed.

“Time and again pharmacists have shown they’re a key part of the NHS family and continue to play a central role in the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

“As we look to the future, the Government and NHS must now make the most of pharmacists’ skills to support the NHS recovery, improve patient safety and reduce health inequalities.

“This must include developing more clinical services for pharmacist independent prescribers, a renewed focus on interoperability of patient records, and investment in education and training.

“We also need to see fair funding for community pharmacy and agreement on new money to cover costs incurred during the pandemic.”
