RPS England responds to NHS People Plan

Responding to the latest part of the NHS People Plan, RPS England Chair Claire Anderson said:

“The last few months have seen a huge commitment from pharmacists and teams across the health service and it’s right they get the help they deserve.

“Our members have been telling us about the importance of health and wellbeing support, sufficient rest breaks and protected time, and it’s welcome to see this reflected in the latest part of the People Plan.

“COVID-19 has highlighted the real need for pharmacy to be integrated as part of the NHS family, so it’s vital that all pharmacists and staff delivering NHS services can access the right support wherever they might work.

“Pharmacists will play a key role in supporting the NHS restoration and recovery and the People Plan recognises the need to recruit and develop the workforce for the future, helping people to enhance their skills and progress their careers.

“We’ll continue working with Health Education England on proposed changes to pre-registration and foundation training and it’s vital this is taken forwards in discussion with stakeholders. If we are to realise the ambition to create a sustainable supply of prescribing pharmacists, this must supported by appropriate funding.

“We must all work together to make pharmacy an attractive career and we welcome the People Plan’s focus on making the NHS open and inclusive. We’ve welcomed the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England’s support for our Inclusion and Diversity Strategy and will continue working with NHS England and Improvement and partners on how we can take this forward for the profession.”
