We must keep antibiotics working, says RPS President

RPS President Ash Soni talked to LBC radio today about the threat of antibiotic resistance at the start of Public Health England’s latest campaign, Keep Antibiotics Working.

PHE’s annual report, the English Surveillance Programme for Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance, highlights how more than 3 million common procedures such as Caesarean sections and hip replacements could become life-threatening without antibiotics.

Ash pointed out that people still expect to get antibiotics from their GP, NHS walk-in centre or out-of-hours service when they visit with a cough, throat, ear, sinus or chest infection.

The ‘Keep Antibiotics Working’ campaign educates the public about the risks of antibiotic resistance and Ash urged listeners to talk to their pharmacist to get effective self-care advice when they feel unwell.

Take a look at our resources on antibiotic resistance and stewardship for pharmacists.
